Faculty and students can access Microsoft Azure developer tools - including Project, Visio, and Visual Studio - for educational purposes (i.e., taking or teaching a class). University staff are not authorized to use these additional tools for everyday work; instead, they must purchase an annual subscription.
General Requirements
Microsoft Project, Visio, and Virtual Studio are available to faculty and students via the Academic VDI. Faculty and students with Windows devices can elect to install the software on their personal devices. (Mac users can only install Visual Studio locally.)
You can install Visio and Project on your computer as stand-alone applications, independent of the Office suite. If you do have Office installed, however, your Office version must be either Office 2019 (and higher) or Office 365 to avoid conflicts with various installation technologies for Visio and Project.
Upgrading to Office 2019 or Office 365
- UD-owned machines: Install Office 2019 using UD’s Volume License Key, either by your unit IT or through the Ivanti Portal Manager.
- Personally-owned machines: Install Office 365

Accessing Visio or Project For Administrative Use (Staff)
UD’s Microsoft enterprise license provides Visio or Project subscriptions for UD staff at significantly reduced annual rates. Discounted rates are only available for annual subscriptions purchased through UD's Microsoft reseller. Subscriptions can be reassigned to other campus users if needed.
Contact Bill Farmer (Procurement and Payable Services) for a quote for the desired product, quantity, and subscription type.
* FREE Visio Alternative: Instead of purchasing a Visio license, UD staff are encouraged to use draw.io, a free diagramming tool that can be accessed online or installed locally.
