Curricular Practical Training (CPT) Advisor Review

Service Overview

School of Engineering (SoE) advisors use this form to review Curricular Practical Training (CPT) requests. If you have any questions, email soecoopintern@udayton.edu.

CPT is the immigration process associated with internships and co-ops off-campus. CPT is a benefit of F-1 student status that allows students to gain professional experience in their field of study before they graduate, through an internship, co-op, or other employment.

Specifically, CPT is:

  • only for employment that is directly related to your major field of study.
  • dependent on your enrollment in a qualifying course. (Once approved, students will be registered for a COP course.)
  • only available after you have completed two semesters as a full-time student.
  • only available before you complete all required coursework, except in some cases for thesis/dissertation students.
  • authorized for a specific employer.
  • authorized for one semester at a time, but can be repeated.
  • also necessary even for unpaid internships, if the volunteer position is related to your major.

You can learn more about CPT, including eligibility requirements, on the International Student and Scholar Services Porches page.
