What is Canvas Catalog / Next?

Canvas Catalog is a public website featuring professional development courses offered by the University of Dayton. Both UD community members and external users can browse and purchase courses at next.udayton.edu.

Next is the University of Dayton’s branded name for Canvas Catalog. Courses offered through Next are hosted in a separate Canvas LMS instance from the one used by UD faculty, staff, and students. Once a course has been purchased at next.udayton.edu, it can be accessed through the Next LMS at https://udayton-next.instructure.com.

Who can access Canvas Catalog / Next?

Canvas Catalog (Next) is available to everyone - even if you do not have a UD account. To purchase a course, you must create a UD account. Courses become accessible only after an account is created. No account is required to browse courses.

Is Next different from canvas.udayton.edu?

Yes. Canvas is a global LMS platform with individual instances for each institution. At the University of Dayton, we have separate instances, which are differentiated by their URLs. Canvas for UD students and faculty is accessed at canvas.udayton.edu, whereas users purchasing a course through Next are redirected to https://udayton-next.instructure.com. However, because both operate through the Canvas LMS, they look identical. UD account holders cannot use canvas.udayton.edu to access their Canvas Catalog (Next) purchases.

If I have a UD account, do I need to create a new account?

No. If you have a UD account and purchase a course, you do not need to create a new account. However, do not log in to canvas.udayton.edu for your course. Instead, log into Canvas Catalog.

Creating a Next / Canvas Catalog Account

  1. Go to https://next.udayton.edu.
     
  2. In the upper right corner, click Login.
     
  3. Click Create new NEXT account.

  4. Complete the required registration information, agree to the terms of service, then click Register New Account.

  5. You will receive a message asking you to log in to the email account you listed and to confirm your email address.
     
  6. Log in to your email and open the confirmation message sent by Canvas Catalog (notifications@instructure.com). Click Complete Registration.

  7. You will be redirected to set up your password and time zone. After entering this information, click Register.

  8. You will be redirected to the Student Dashboard. Your account is now created and your registration is complete. You may now begin purchasing your courses.

Purchasing Courses in Canvas Catalog

  1. Go to next.dayton.edu.
     
  2. In the upper right corner, click Login.
     
  3. Log in with either your UD account or the account you created using the Creating a Next / Canvas Catalog Account steps.

    If you have a UD account, click Login for UD Users.

    If you created an account, click Login for Public Users.

  4. Once you have logged in, you can navigate back to the catalog by going to https://next.udayton.edu or clicking on the UD symbol in the upper left corner.
     
  5. Click on the course you wish to purchase then click Enroll Now.

  6. You will be redirected to a checkout page. If you have a promo code, enter it. Otherwise click Pay and Enroll.
     
  7. You will be redirected to a payment screen. Enter your payment information and click Continue.
     
  8. Once you complete your payment information, you will be directed to a screen that completes your enrollment. Make sure the screen says Enrolled before choosing Go to Course.

  9. You will be directed to Next to complete your course.

  10. You will also receive a confirmation email for the purchased course.

Logging Into Next and Viewing Courses

  1. Go to next.dayton.edu.
     
  2. In the upper right corner, click Login.
     
  3. Log in with either your UD account or the account you created using the Creating a Next / Canvas Catalog Account steps.

    If you have a UD account, click Login for UD Users.

    If you created an account, click Login for Public Users.

  4. To log in to Next, click on your name in the upper right corner then click My Courses. You will be directed to the Next dashboard.

  5. To individually view the purchased courses, click Student Dashboard. From there you can see your completed, in progress, and uncompleted courses. You can also directly launch a course from this location.

Troubleshooting

Password Reset

  1. Log in to Next or go directly to https://udayton-next.instructure.com/login/canvas.
     
  2. Click the Forgot Password link.

  3. A password reset link will be sent to your email.
