Google Colaboratory is a free, cloud-based hosted Jupyter Notebook service that allows users to write and execute code, primarily Python, in their web browser. It requires zero setup and provides users with free access to computing resources, including GPUs and TPUs.
NOTE: The use of Google Colab is not covered under the University of Dayton’s Google Workspace agreement. Individuals who use Google Colab assume all associated risks and are solely responsible for addressing any technical or account-related issues that may occur.
Terms of Service and Data Security
Separate Agreement
Google Colab is an additional Google service that is not covered under the institution's (UD’s) Google Workspace agreement. Colab has its own specific Terms of Service.
No Sensitive Data
Colab is not suitable for confidential or sensitive information. Users should avoid using the platform for any protected, private, or secure data.
Use in Coursework
Instructor Requirement
Although the free version is available to University accounts, instructors must not require the use of Colab for any course assignment or activity.
Student Optional Use
Individual students may choose to use Colab as an alternative tool for coursework or for personal, independent study. By choosing to use Colab, the student accepts the Google Colab Additional Terms of Service.
Colab Pro & Pay As You Go Offerings
Availability
Only the free version of Google Colab is available to University accounts.
Support Limitation
The Google Apps Team cannot provide access to Colab Pro or any paid additions to Colab. We also cannot extend the free time available to University accounts through a pay-as-you-go offering.
