What to do if Your Account Credentials are Exposed in a Data Breach

It's likely that online services you use will, at some point, experience a data breach. When this happens, you might receive an email directly from the service provider or from our IT Risk Management Office.

NOTE:  UD is notified whenever UD email accounts are found in online "data dumps".

If you receive a notification that your credentials have been exposed in a data breach, do the following:

  1. If the exposed password is used anywhere else, change it immediately.

  2. Use two-factor / multi-factor authentication for any online service that offers it to provide an additional layer of protection to your account.

  3. Visit haveibeenpwned.com and check for any breaches for your other email addresses or passwords. If a breach has occurred, change the passwords!

  4. Use unique passwords for accounts with sensitive information. Password manager apps can help you keep track of them.

  5. Beware of extortion and other social engineering scams that try to use "dumped" information to trick you.

  6. Review your billing and bank statements every month to quickly spot any suspicious charges.

  7. Visit annualcreditreport.com quarterly to review your credit report for free.
