What Is the Canvas Student Concierge?

The Canvas Student Concierge is an AI assistant that connects directly to your Canvas account and helps you quickly find information about your courses, assignments, grades, and more — all in a conversational, easy-to-use chat interface. Instead of clicking through Canvas to find what you need, you can simply ask. The Canvas Student Concierge is a University of Dayton AI tool. Use is subject to UD's acceptable use policies. For questions or feedback, contact the IT Service Center.

Getting Started

Step 1 - Authorize Your Canvas Account

The first time you use the Concierge, you will need to connect your Canvas account:

  1. Type any Canvas-related question or simply say "Get started".
  2. The Concierge will provide you with a one-time authorization link.
  3. Click the link and log in with your UD Canvas credentials.
  4. Return to the chat and you're ready to go.

Step 2 - Start Asking Questions

Once authorized, just type your question naturally. No special commands needed.

What Can I Ask?

📅 Assignments & Due Dates

"What assignments do I have due this week?"

"What's due this Friday across all my courses?"

"Show me all assignments for my English class"

"Do I have anything past due?"

"When is my next exam?"

📝 Syllabus

"Can you pull up the syllabus for my Chemistry class?"

"What is the late work policy for ECO 203?"

"What's the grading breakdown for my Biology course?"

"When are the exams scheduled for my English class?"

NOTE: The syllabus must be posted by your professor in Canvas for the Concierge to retrieve it. If it can't be found, the Concierge will provide a direct link to check Canvas and suggest contacting your professor.

🎯Grades

"What is my current grade in Biology?"

"Show me my grades on all assignments in ECO 203"

"What did I score on the Chapter 5 quiz?"

"Which assignments am I missing in my English class?"

“Did my last essay get graded?”

NOTE: Grades are only visible after your professor has released them — the same as in Canvas directly.

📋 Quizzes

"Do I have any quizzes coming up?"

"When is my next quiz in Biology?"

"Show me all quizzes across my courses"

"What are the details for my Chapter 6 quiz?"

To-Do & Planning

"What's on my Canvas to-do list?"

"Help me plan my week — what do I have coming up?"

"Show me everything due in the next 14 days"

Tips for Best Results

Be Specific When You Can

The more specific your question, the better the answer:

  "What are my grades?"

"What is my current grade in ECO 203?"

  "Show me assignments"

"Show me all assignments due this week in Biology"

Mention the Course Name

If you have multiple courses, mentioning the course name helps the Concierge find the right information faster:

"What's due this week in my Chemistry class?"

"Show me the syllabus for ECO 203"

Ask Follow-Up Questions

The Concierge remembers the context of your conversation:

You: "Show me my assignments for Biology"

You: "Which of those are past due?"

You: "What did I score on the first one?"

Ask for Summaries

Instead of browsing through long lists, ask for what matters:

"Summarize what I have due this week"

"Give me a quick overview of how I'm doing in all my courses"

"What should I focus on today?"

What the Concierge Cannot Do

The Concierge is read-only - it can retrieve and display your Canvas information but cannot take actions on your behalf:

Important Things to Know

Your Data Is Private

  • The Concierge only accesses your Canvas data
  • It cannot see other students' grades, submissions, or information
  • Never share your password or student ID in the chat

Canvas Is Always the Source of Truth

  • The Concierge pulls live data directly from Canvas

  • Every response includes a direct link to the relevant Canvas page so you can verify the information

  • If something looks incorrect, always verify in Canvas at https://udayton.instructure.com

  • Due dates, grades, and course content are controlled by your professor — the Concierge displays what Canvas provides

Content Availability

  • The Concierge can only show content your professor has published in Canvas

  • Unpublished pages, locked modules, and unreleased grades will not be visible

  • The Concierge is limited to helping with deadlines, syllabus information, and grades — for other Canvas content, visit Canvas directly

Allow Time for Updates

  • Canvas sometimes takes a few minutes to reflect recent changes made by your professor

  • If you just submitted an assignment or your professor just posted a grade, wait a few minutes and ask again
