Installing Mobile Device Management (MDM) Software (Android / Other)

UD's Mobile Device Management (MDM) service (currently Workspace ONE) installs a profile on your mobile device that configures and maintains basic security settings to help protect your privacy and the university's data.

NOTE: Workspace ONE is required on all University-sponsored Android devices.

After installing and configuring Workspace ONE, your device will:

  • Require a device passcode (on your phone and connected devices like a smart watch)
  • Time out after a period of inactivity and require a password to unlock it
  • Sync your email, contacts, and calendar appointments during the first few minutes after installation if email activation is supported on your device
  • Check periodically to make sure it isn't rooted
  • Display the Workspace ONE app and the UDayton App Catalog
  • Perform otherwise as it did before you installed the MDM

Installing and configuring Workspace ONE

If you've previously installed Workspace ONE on your device, first open the Workspace ONE app and select This Device - Enrollment - Unenroll device.

Step 1: Download the Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub Agent app

In the Google Play Store, search for the Intelligent Hub app and tap Install.

NOTE: Workspace ONE requires that your device is running OS 4.4.2 or later.

Step 2: Enroll in Workspace ONE device management

  1. Open the Intelligent Hub Agent app.

  2. Type your UD email address in the Email address or server field and tap Next.

  3. Tap Next on the Welcome to Workspace ONE UEM! screen.

  4. Select BYOD as organization group and tap Continue.

  5. Enter your UD username and password and tap Next.

  6. Select ownership of your device: Choose Corporate Owned then Corporate - Dedicated from the Details dropdown and tap Next.

NOTE: You’ll notice an option for "Employee Owned" at this stage as well. This option does NOT apply the correct level of support access for UD-sponsored devices; the “Corporate Owned” setting allows us to remotely wipe the data from your phone in the event that it’s lost or stolen.

  7. On the Privacy screen, tap I Understand.

  8. On the Data Sharing screen, either Not Now or I Agree if you would like to share usage analytics to VMware.

  9. On the Set up a work profile screen, tap Agree.

Step 3: Set a passcode for your device

If you do not already have a passcode, you will be prompted by Workspace ONE to set one within 60 minutes after your device is enrolled in MDM.
